About Me:
My name is Dawn Pomraning and after 20 years of working as a Human Resource Manager and Recruiter in the Air Force I am now combining my love of people and plants. I went back to school again and I am now a practicing Horticulturist/Landscape Designer. Thanks to great teachers, I was the top Horticulture student and I later represented my school as one of the top students at the state level. I am also a NC Certified Plant Professional. Plants and people--what a great combination!

I spent Summer 2007 at Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, GA working in a horticulture education internship--summers are very hot in GA. I'm also very fortunate--Clemson Univ has just accepted me into their Masters of Landscape Architecture program.

I'm also proud to be a member of the "Gals in Green". We are a casual group of horticulturists/designers/plant geeks who support and nourish each other in our "green" professions. As a group we visit nurseries, gardens and especially the eating establishments that serve good wine. We donate our time and talents to the Bullington Center (Henderson), NC Arboretum and Habitat for Humanity to name a few. The Hendersonville newspaper featured us a couple of months ago--"The Gals in Green find Horticulture". I am also a member and Vice President of Membership for the Land of Sky Toastmasters in Arden. I can talk about many things, but teaching others about horticulture is my real passion.

Education is another passion of mine--I love school! My grandmother was a model example of "You are never too old" to start school. She started school in her late 40s and finished with a PhD. Her grades were also perfect--4.0 GPA. Fortunately, I have benefited from earning a few degrees--Human Resources, Buss/Mngt/ and Horticulture. They all have served me well in my profession. I'm thankful and humbled for the opportunity to be able to advance my education. Lastly, I work as a seasonal reserve member of Biltmore Floral Display during the holidays when my profession slows down. My life and profession are full of rich experiences--great people, challenges that help me grow and plants galore. I am thankful for everyday and all the daily experiences I encounter.

Favorite Plants:
I love most plants as a rule--the textures, colors, shapes, foliage, blooms and fragrances--a well-designed landscape has all of these characteristics in mind. There is always something captivating all year long in my garden.

Professional landscaping

I have met more people this year that feel they have been “taken” by a Landscaper, than I have in the past three years. Sometimes it’s because of a dishonest landscaper and there are now, more than ever, people landscaping that may not have all of the qualifications to landscape. So I will share what I know in my second year as a degreed horticulturist and a l

Knock out Roses to the rescue

 Image of Knock Out Rose

Many people love roses, but are not fond of all the care requirements involved. One of the most common problems that gardeners deal with is the dreaded black spot, which is a fungus called Diplocarpon rosae. A simple solution of water, baking soda and a dab of liquid soap will usually halt a black spot issue. But if you have a lot of roses, that may be…

Dawn,
I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciated your letting me know about the hellebores. I have been so busy this week, between recovering from family visiting me to getting ready for our trip to the Pacific Northwest next week - looking forward to all of the gardens.
Thanks for thinking of me anyway. I'll definitely see you on Sept. 5 for check in!
Happy gardening!

Dawn,
I wanted to go ahead and give directions to my place before things get busy, and I forget! My address:
24 Moriah Lane, Asheville, 651-8255. (south Asheville)
From Biltmore Village, take Hendersonville Rd. about 5 miles and turn left on Mills Gap Rd. at the traffic light. (KFC and Earth Fare on your left)
Go about 1 mile on Mills Gap and turn LEFT onto Pinners Cove Rd. There is a billboard, and U-Haul place - be careful turning left, as you can't see the cars coming, so STOP before turning left.
Go 3/4 mile and turn RIGHT just after crossing a small bridge. (this is School Rd., but the sign may be down).
Go 1/4 mile and take first RIGHT onto Bethel Dr., There is a sign for Applewood Estates at this corner.
Take first left onto Moriah Lane (street sign for Moriah is on the right) Go to top of hill to #24 on the left.
We have 2 driveways - the first is immediately to the left, and you will see the other after passing the front entrance - can park in either one. I have rose bushes in front in a rock garden so you can't miss it.

I wanted to let you know that I have invited someone from my last class to tour my garden on July 22 at 10:00 am, and wondered if you might be able to come that day. If not, possibly another day that week.
Thanks for info on the symposium at the Arboretum. The one last year was great.
