About a Fall Garden

I know that some are hanging up their garden tools around this time of year. After many weeks of picking squash and tomatoes and putting up more pickles than can be eaten in a winter, folks tell me they have earned a break. But since I got started with my garden later than most, I [...]

Notes from Wednesday Evening

I was on a business trip from Sunday to Tuesday, and came home to plenty of chores.  I planted the second set of cole crops, some new plots of spinach, lettuce, chard, onions and carrots, and then my son and I mowed the lawn.  A busy evening before dark. Here’s a brief rundown: Everything but the beets [...]

Good Catalogue

I ran across this catalogue reading ads in Acres USA magazine.  I sent off for a hard copy of the Berryhill Irrigation catalogue. They have a wide variety of irrigation supplies and other accessories.  It is one of those old style wish books that is interesting reading. I don’t know if I will ever buy anything from [...]

Bean Picking Commences

We picked our first batch of Roma beans on Tuesday (maybe 1-2 pounds). I pulled another 4-5 pounds last night, there are another 2-3 pounds that I will get this evening.  I suspect we will be picking more by the weekend. My bean experiment has proven to be fruitful. I planted three rows of beans in a [...]

Fall Planting Update

I planted the first of my fall beds yesterday after work.  It was a couple of hours of joy putting all of those seed and plants in the ground.  I will have 3 or 4 succession plantings that should take me into the winter.  Here is what went into the ground: 6 bok choi, 6 broccoli, [...]

Dog Days in the Garden

We are in the “dog days” of summer. The dates go back to ancient Greece and Rome when astronomers observed Sirius (the “Dog Star”) appearing in the sky before sunrise. The farmer’s almanac designates the days from July 3 to August 11 for the same reason. This period is generally associated with the hot and sultry days of summer. As I write, the air is humid and warm–truly a “dog day.”

It is usually during the “Dog Days”…

First Days in the New Home

We thought we would be closing on the new home on May 22nd. That way we could spend the holiday weekend moving. The best laid plans better be ready for change. It was actually a week later when we signed the papers, throwing all of our schedules off. We slept in the house for the first time on June 2nd, so yard and garden plans had to wait.

Here are a few projects that have taken shape in the past couple of weeks:

Homesteading Video on CNN

A very interesting video on CNN--

Urban Homesteaders in Pasadena, CA

A very interesting use of 1/10 acre property in an urban setting.

Not practical for everybody, but an interesting concept.

Pruning Video Animation (Arbor Day Foundation)

I got this link from "Master Your Garden", a blog from the Cooperative Extension Service in Haywood County.

Free Online Pruning Guide

I thought it was an excellent resource for basic pruning needs.
