An Epic Struggle: Man against Lawn (The Prologue)

This past year I had the great pleasure of attempting to start lawn. The planting part was great, and my excitement grew as little tips of green started to break through the straw. An Epic Struggle: Man against Lawn (My notes on using a spreader)

There are a couple of key things to note when using a spreader.

First, if you stop moving, close the trap that releases whatever your spreading out the bottom. If your spreading fertilizer like I was, and forget to do so, you end up with a pretty large pile sitting underneath the spreader when you come back. Unfortunately, this falls into the category of not applying the fertilizer according to the directions, which in turn negates their claim of not burning the seedlings. I now have a…

An Epic Struggle: Man against Lawn (attempt two)

I woke up early the next day. Between the excitement of getting my lawn going and the pain from prepping the day before, who could sleep. Ok, it was mostly the pain that woke me up. Anyway, today was going to be a good day. Thankfully, the rest of the plan involved riding on the mower. Once again, I pulled the mower out, and this time hooked up an aerator. Weighted it down and proceeded to roll it over the lawn until it was thoroughly filled with little holes.

An Epic Struggle: Man against Lawn (Prepping for attempt two)

It was time to try again. I was ready to go. I had it all planned out. The first thing I had to do was... was... oh yeah, I had to wait. Fall (so I have been told) is a good time to plant grass. The problem with this is timing. You want to do it before it gets cold to give the seedlings time to get a healthy little root system, but late enough to dodge the hottest months.
