About Gardenerd

Gardenerd
Hometown:
Canton, NC
Gardening Experience:
Expert
About Me:
I am a Buncombe County Master Gardener (2007 Volunteer of the Year) and am currently enrolled in horticulture classes at Haywood Community College. I am also the President of the Leicester Garden Club. Gardening is my "golf" so I spend as much time as possible in the garden. My gardening knowledge has been collected from Kansas, Colorado, Texas and Missouri. I have learned the most and have been the happiest gardening in WNC! I'm not visiting - I REALLY live here!!!!
Favorite Plants:
I have mostly perennials but love all plants. I like to be able to look out any window of my house and see flowers in bloom. I have recently become a fan of variegated foliage.
Garden as a hobby?

Good to hear back from you! I went to Haywood 2005 -2007. I had retired from the Air Force and pretty much went straight into school. It's a long story that I will have tell you sometime. I don't know Nina--was she a student?

I can pretty much imagaine the whole vegetable planting issue at HCC--you described it just the way it happened a couple of summers ago....I also like some kinda of organization. 20 yrs in the Air Force has helped me out a bit with people issues--I roll with the punches when I have to or otherwise it will drive me nuts!

George is really smart--he stands back and lets people make mistakes so that they learn from them. I really miss him--a wonderful teacher.

I'm sure you are looking forward to a "working" knee and I hope I can meet you before the operation. If not--you may have a little more free time so I can meet you. I do understand the business of the season--I have something going on 7 days a week--I just peck out some time each day to do the things I want to or I would be really frustrated. Give me a call when you can--606-5436.

I wasn't able to attend. I pulled my back out while digging the veg garden in class.
June was delighted with the turnout and was so happy when she called me. She said it was a wonderful day! Thanks again for your article. Our next meeting is on Hybridizing Daylilies on June 27 at the Leicester Fire Dept. at 1 pm.

How did the open house go? I was out of town or I would have stopped by.

Hi Gardenerd,

I bet it's nice living kinda close to Haywood Comm College. I drove 64 miles every day to school when I attended. I just noticed your picture of your front yard and agree that it's very pretty. We must meet some time for coffee/tea or meet at the Arboretum. I'd like to hear more about your Air Force son--I tried for twelve years to get to Anchorage and I went to the Black Hills in SD instead--it turned out to be the greatest assignment ever. Tell George, John and Buddy hello for me--they know me as Dawn Pomraning. Please call me sometime--828-606-5436 (cell) so I can get to meet you.

I just changed my photo. This is in the front of my house on May 17. I hope you find it as pretty as I think it is!

Gardenerd,

How are your horticulture classes going? I want to get over that way and visit George, Buddy and John. I will be doing a plant rescue out that way in a couple of weeks. Randy, a passionate plant rescuer and myself will rescue some plants off a lady's property before it is sold and bulldozed. We do this a lot, but always with permission from the property owner.

I have one with a bud on it. I planted it last year and it didn't bloom. I love anything variegated!

I just bought a varigated miniature iris when from the open market this past week-end in Roanoke Virginia. Have you ever grown the varigated iris?
