Let's talk about integrated pest management techniques

What does this mean, exactly? How does it manifest in your gardening? I think people often have some misconceptions about it, and others incorporate it in creative ways.

I thought someone would have responded by now. The bottom line for me is--scouting for pest problems, keeping areas clean/sanitary and only using chemicals when absolutely necessary--Did I mention that worm castings have natural fungal and pest control? So--worm castings are a (gardener) girl's best friend--not diamonds......

I agree with your approach. It's also important to keep plants vigorous--well watered and fed--so that they can withstand a bit of adversity when insects or mites or other critters show up to feed. Strong plants can tolerate more than plants that are already stressed from overcrowding, lack of water, etc. I've been having a hard time with Colorado potato beetles this year--tried squashing them, but it was impossible to keep up with them--I must have missed the first few and their population escalated rapidly. Most years I can squash them (beetles and nymphs) and keep ahead of the problem. This year I've resorted to insecticidal soap with so-so results and a biological control (bacteria) specifically for them. Still, even though I knock down the population, they come back. Any good ideas?

I bet Samantha has some good ideas--I'm out of the vegetable raising arena these days because of my part sun yard.

I appreciate this information. I was trying to put a handle or definition on what exactly it meant. Thanks for the posts.
