They're baaaack!

We had a swarm of Japanese beetles in our front yard Sunday morning. I don't know if Saturday's deluge caused them all to climb out of the ground, but they were everywhere. Lovely<-spoken in snarky voice mode.

Doug--they never left your yard. They have left your soil as larvae that have been eating your grass/plant roots. They always emerge around this time of year as a result of metamorphosis. Here's one of many good web sites on the unlovely beatle. http://www.uaex.edu/Other_Areas/publications/PDF/FSA-7062.pdf

Informative article. Do you think the heavy rains on Saturday caused them to "hatch."? I haven't seen any more since Sunday. And yes, I knew they never left, by back I meant the adult stage. ~grumble grumble grumble~ little buggers...

I just know that this is their adult part of their metamorphosis time--just keep them in your area--ok? ha ha

Mine have been going strong since Saturday. So far, I've sprayed with Sevin and hand-picked them and dropped them into a jar with Sein and water. What have you tried? There are more very day :):(

The best method for me (so far), is to hand-pick them and put them in soapy water. I must be lucky--haven't seen the first one in my own yard.

I am! I'm dealing with other issues--Turkeys! They are digging up my yard--I'm ok with it though. We can all live together, as it's their habitat too.

I'm the same way with squirrels and bird seed--there's enough for everybody. Meanwhile, I continue to pick beetles--more than ever. Gross! I think they liked the malathion my huband sprayed

I am a politically incorrect gardener. I have a bag witha scented lure. Actually two. I let it fill for two days and then change the first with the second, empty and clean out the first one. My previous home occupant planted cherry trees that the little buggers just love, and the trees are too tall for me to reach to pluck them. I shook the branches once and about twenty bugs fell out.

I figure I'm ridding the planet of 100 or so of the sleazy varmints every two days. Lots of other folks (most) in mt neighborhood have the bags out too.

btw, I laughed when GTG called them "unlovely beatle[s]." A Stones fan? ;-)

Well--I may be a little too young, but not by much, to appreciate the Stones. I am feeling lucky though--no cicadas, no beatles, just Turkeys these days and clients that don't water their plants.
