Gardening Experience:

About Me:
Although relatively new to Western NC, I've been gardening all my life. As a matter of fact, I've made a career of it. I have been an extension agent in Maryland, taught horticulture in Maryland and Virginia, and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in St. Lucia. For the past 20 years, I have written for many gardening magazines and have contributed to several gardening books.
I love growing plants for food -- I have a sweet kitchen garden--and I'm working on several ornamental beds.
Favorite Plants:
Ornamental vines of all kinds. Woodland perennials. Sunflowers. Vegetables, herbs, apples, thornless blackberries, blueberries.....
Garden as a hobby?

You sound like a really cool gardener Rita. Peace Corps and everything! I hope you will post more about your gardening here in the mountains.

Rita,

Glad you are adding to the post. I lived in nothern VA myself, while working in Pentagon. I thought about becoming an Extension Officer for a long time. The thought kinda left me, when my husband told me he hates moving. I'm looking at other options. I hope to meet you sometime and read more of your posts.

Hi Rita,
Yes, I do propagate heaths and heather. I started more than a year ago, a friend that has been propagating heather for more than 25 years has been sharing his knowledge about these plants. We have two locations about 50 miles apart.

We do sell the plants we propagate, but there always seem to several that make their way into the landscape. From now until early Spring is a good time for photos, the Callunas have the Fall and Winter colors and the Ericas are in bloom.
