Of broccoli flowers and butterflies...

Now I know what happens to broccoli when you let it go - it flowers, beautifully. Delicate pale yellow flowers, as many blossoms almost as their were buds in the head. I broke off a stem, and the plant still tasted pretty good. I was thinking about harvesting it and whisking it into the steamer in the kitchen, but I decided to leave it for this small whitish butterflies that seem to appreciate it as much as I. What kind of butterflies are they? They seem to dart as much up and down as sideways,… Continue

Japanese maple stricken by cold snap last year...

The cold killed the limbs, but evidently not the tree - this spring I'm getting small shoots coming out of the trunk and the first part of the larger branches. I'm afraid it's going to look weird, but I could be wrong. What can I expect from the looks of the tree this year? Should I cut it down and cut my losses?

How frost hearty are pole beans?

While I was putting peas in the ground yesterday, I pushed some pole bean seeds into the ground, thinking that if I didn't water them, the chances of them sprouting (in fairly dry soil) before a frost are minimal this time of year. Does anyone have any experience with this? Will I be replanting them again in early May?

Also, where can I get spinach seeds? Or should I start with plants?

Early basil?

Sunday was so beautiful that I couldn't resist buying some basil and putting it in the ground. It's small enough that I can cover it with a bucket if frost threatens. Basil is maybe the one herb I can't live without. Has anyone grown it from seed?

Also got parsley (curley and Italian) and catnip in. Beans, peas and spinach this weekend. Delete…

Hey Paul, if you want to grow basil, why don't you post a forum thingy about it asking people who grow it when they plant, if they plant from seed, etc. Just a thought.

Hey Paul, like a lot of people on GardenAsheville you remain confused about the difference between blog posts and forum questions. Blog posts are your observations, kind of like an online garden journal. If you have a question, like about your Japanese maple, you should post it to the Forum and then people can answer it. Hope this helps ....
