Outside of roses I like easy plants, particularly the native azaleas and oakleaf hydrangeas, plus lavenders and some of the artemisias that work well in a rose garden.

I have just completed my back yard shade garden (June 21). It's been a ton of work, but I've a pretty good idea what you can do with a slope (30% grade), rocks, and plants that tolerate some to a lot of shade plus this heavy clay. If your friends need any ideas, I'll be here.
