Call for West Asheville Gardeners

Just got this in my email - sounds like a great idea:

West Asheville Gardeners and Garden lovers

Join the West Asheville library and West Asheville residents in organizing an August or September 2009 Garden Walk.

West Asheville is blessed with a bevy of beautiful gardens, including Community, Art, Business/professional, herb, and privately cultivated vegetable and flower that have potential as an area walking tour.

More on yardsharing and 4/5 seed swap

I've been talking to a few people about the yardsharing idea and there seems to be some interest in the West Asheville area. I'm going to go to this seed swap and I'll bring a sign up sheet to start connecting potential gardeners and yard space. We may have a meeting in mid April about it.

Yardsharing!

Here's a good and timely idea - Yardsharing!

I just found out about a new Ning that helps to connect people who want to to share growing space, seeds, skills and gardening resources in order to grow food as locally as possible, literally right down the street. It's a natural extension of community gardening.

For example - your neighbor a few blocks away has a big flat lawn and works long hours so he has little time to garden. But he… Continue

More manure and blueberries

Got 2 truck loads of horse manure this week. One for my new veggie garden and one for a friend who has an established garden nearby. The poop is partially seasoned, so it's not too smelly, but it needs a couple more months to sit before I plant in it. There is a lot of sawdust mixed in which makes it pretty easy to shovel or rake out of the truck. I still need to rake it into place over my cardboard/leaf sheet mulch (which has been blowing… Continue

Herb Garden

I dug into my sheet mulched new front yard garden yesterday. Taking advantage of the all too brief warm weather. I've had it sitting with layers of cardboard, manure and dry leaves since October. There were lots of worms! I dug out the paths. I still need some newspaper and wood chips to line them. I have a very elaborate garden plan for this plot. Don't know if I'll get it all in this year.

I planted some very late daffodil bulbs around the yard too. Got the 40 pack at Lowes. Tucked them… Continue

Dear Murphy Hersey Family,
Do you conserve rain water? Do you have a way of capturing rain water at your community gardens? A 1000 sq. ft building will harvest 600 gallons of rain water during a 1 inch rainfall.

I sell 275 gallon rain water tanks that I have attached a garden hose fitting to. I would be interested in speaking with you if you have an interest in using rain water at your community gardens. Water pressure is achieved by elevating tank on cinder blocks or brick. I would be happy to come on site and make it work for your application. I also install such tanks and have a gutter man who will do any gutter work required. Beat the drought. 828-980-3982 Carolyn K. Elgin

I have one new tank with reconditioned cage ($275.00)on metal pallet and one tank that had a food additive in it with a wooden pallet($200.00). Both of these tanks have garden hose attachments on them.

Are you watering an area that is above where your tanks are located? Did you elevate the tanks on cinder blocks or brick/wooden foundation? My thought is that if I could get away with not having to use a pump, I certainly would do so. I have three of these tanks installed elevated at my house/barn and I do not use pumps.

I have installed at least 8 of these tanks and 55 gallon rain barrels and feel comfortable evaluating a site for use of tanks. If you would like me to do so, I would be happy to come and evaluate the use of them and how I would improve on it. Let me know if you have an interest. 828-980-3982
