About Me:
I love plants. I grow plants from all over the world, the weirder the better. My first love is the world of cacti, but I have become quite the conifer and Japanese maple nut over the past few years.

I work for B.B. Barns, and I also write about plants in various publications. Mostly, I love to take pictures of plants, particularly in flower. I love sharing my love of plants with others, and I look forward to sharing this great community with all of you!

Favorite Plants:
Cacti:
Ariocarpus fissuratus (and other Ariocarpus cacti)
Astrophytum spp. (particularly the mutant Japanese forms like 'Super Kabuto')
Echinopsis spp. 'Paramount Hybrids' (because they flower like a champ!)
Turbinocarpus spp. (they grow slow as can be, but I find them charming)

Maples and Conifers:
'Beni Kawa,' 'Sangu Kaku,' and 'Japanese Sunrise' palmatum
Trident Maples (beautiful bonsai specimen0
Sugar Maples (come on, who doesn't love these trees?)
The two Red Maples I planted with my grandfather in his front yard when I was 10 years old.
Japanese Black Pines, Prostrate Scotch Pines, and (as boring as they may be) Loblolly pines because they remind me of going to school in Raleigh.
Hemlocks. (Man, I hope we can save them)
Garden as a hobby?
Yes

Last year I gave away 5 - 5gallon buckets full of cuttings! Where were you? LOL

Write to me just before the first frost and I think I might have some to give away. My pinks did not come back this year so that leaves me with white (they smell like lemon) and Yellow (very sweet and very strong smell)

If I have extra cuttings you are more than welcome to some of them.

I will be getting some new mushroom spawn in a about a week and a half and I will do a picture tutorial of shitake and oyster inoculation as well as how to prepare a morel bed. As far as favorite brew recipes we tend to make a lot of pale and amber ales in the summer and dark beers and lagers in the winter. We kind of just go to the brew store and design it there. A typical recipe for us would be 1 oz of Cascade Hops, 3 pounds of Light Malt, 1 lb corn sugar, 1 oz of Saaz or Cascade to finish. That makes 5 gallons. We keg our beer to avoid washing a ton of bottles. You can make a drinkable beer in a week and be drinking it.

Whoops, what happened? Vanishing posts. Anyway - I just wrote to say thank you for your help with those three native flame azaleas. I kept them in the shade at home, and well watered, until yesterday. Then I loaded them in the truck, covered them, and drove them to their new home at 4000 feet between Sylva and Bryson City. Dug three big holes, plopped em each in one, covered them, mulched them and watered them in. I think they will be happy there.

Thanks again for your help. Now let's hope for some rain!

What I'm thinking Michael, is that it would be productive to have a GardenAsheville technology orientation workshop for people like Gerda (who is an absolute dear). We have a "smart board" in the news conference room where we can pull the site up on screen. Do you guys have anything like this at B.B. Barns? I'm trying to think logistically when to have it when it would not interfere with the newsroom. We use it a lot and have a lot of meetings in there. Also, when would people be more likely to come? Probably a Saturday??

We had dinner the other night with our dear friends Tom and Betty Taylor, and I learned that you are the young genius behind this web site. It is beautiful and, despite being complex, it works very well. I'm enjoying it, As a member of the same generation as Tom (although he always points out he is a few months younger), I have to admit that I'm perplexed about a few things - especially some of the terminology. I don't know what "embed" means and I'm clueless about "RSS." could you please explain them to me, as if you were talking to your mother? Thanks.

Hi Michael,
Seeds in yesterday's mail. Thanks.
Any special planting instructions? How long do the seeds take to germinate?

Michael: Sorry to be tardy but just got back to the computer after doing stories on the new Daniel Stowe Orchid House and three days touring some of the classy gardens in Charlotte. Best, Peter
