About Me:
I live on a farm in Leicester, North Carolina. I have enjoyed gardening for most of my lifetime. I am a member of and the founder of the Leicester Garden Club. I have been a member of the Buncombe County Master Gardener Volunteers for 10 years.

I have a hobby greenhouse and spend a lot of my time there. My favorite plants are succulents and poppies. I make living wreaths, toparies, container gardens and all kinds of interesting and beautiful things. I now have to sell some of my plants because heating the greenhouse has gotten so expensive.

I make containers of hypertufa and by sand casting. I teach classes in making hypertufa, sand casting, living wreaths and toparies.

I also love entering the Mountain State Fair Flower Show. I take lots of entries each year. I have won lots of blue ribbons and Best of Show for my living wreaths, succulent topiary, arrangement of lotus blossoms and other plants over the years.

As you can tell, I LOVE GARDENING !

Garden as a hobby?
Yes
Polly,

Yes, a greenhouse is wonderful! It's like walking into a tropical forest. I have plants from floor to ceiling with orchids, clivia, bougainvilla, cacti, kalenchoe and even some petunias in bloom.
Even though the greenhouse is 60' x 16' I still need more room. If heating were't so expensive I would consider building another. But, a greenhouse if very confining. One can loose plants just by taking a long weekend vacation. I would rather spend my time in the greenhouse than traveling.

My Greenhouse

Yes, a greenhouse is wonderful! I have spent lots of time there this cold dreary winter. It's like walking into a tropical forest. There are orchids, clivia, cacti, kalenchoe, and even petunias in bloom. I am hardening off my red, green and Chinese cabbage, broccoli and kohlrabi plants to plant outside. I am putting in seeds of cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, eggplant, etc. to plant outside when all danger of frost is over. Even though the greenhouse is 60' x16' I still need more room. I would… Continue

June, welcome to the conversation. You have a lot of expertise to share. I hope you will blog on your page about your greenhouse, flowers and farm life in general. If you need help getting started on a blog, let me know.

Hi June!

I'd be happy to send some seeds to you. I'll get them out today, along with some germination tips.

Cheers,
Michael

Hi June, I didn't start the sight but it's become part of my job at the Citizen-Times to run it. What fun! There are 6 community plant sales/shows this weekend, can you believe it? We will have a roundup for the readers in Friday's Home & Garden section. Hope you have a good show at the Grove Arcade.

I love your site June. I make hypertufa containers also, but I'm sure you are more of an expert on that matter than me. I am very interested in your workshops--can you shoot me some more info on when/where/how much? in regards to your workshops. I'm a little short of free time right now--I design/landscape gardens now that I'm done with horticulture school. This is a very busy season for me. I look forward to hearing from you. GTG

Hi Garden Thyme Girl,
Love your name! School sounds exciting! Wish I could do that.
I'm not sure when I will have an opening for hypertufa, maybe June. Classes are held here on the farm in the old 125 year old barn. I'll put you on the list.

Hi June, glad the seeds came through okay.

Keep them warm and moist in a mix that is half potting soil, half coarse sand. Place them on top of the soil, then sprinkle just a little bit of that mix on top of the seeds. They should sprout in 2 to 6 weeks.

Cheers!

Hi June,
How was the turnout at Saturday's at the Grove Arcade Flower Show? I went to 2 other events, got some cool plants and then was too tired to plant them. :(
Hope you had a good turnout. There's always Sunday, too.

You're not going to find $10 orchids anywhere. That's amazing in of itself.

Hi June,
It was wonderful spending time with you in your garden Monday. Here’s the info on the bamboo festival I was telling you about:
Bamboo Festival: Features lectures and demonstrations on growing and using bamboo, as well as sale of bamboo plants and crafts, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. July 12, noon-5 p.m. July 13, N.C. Arboretum. More info: 665-2492 or visit www.ncarboretum.org.
Also the bamboo nursery I mentioned is Haiku Bamboo Nursery in Edenyville. Here’s a link for you, for more information.
I admire your many talents. Thanks again,
Polly
