Profile Information

Hometown:
Arden, NC
Gardening Experience:
Expert
About Me:
After 20 years in the Air Force, I went back to school to become a horticulturist. I was an Education/Horticultural intern during summer 2007 at Callaway Gardens. I enjoy donating my time and horticultural skills to Habitat for Humanity, Bullington Center, NC Arboretum, and my church.
Favorite Plants:
I love most plants as a rule--the textures, colors, shapes, foliage, blooms and fragrances--a well-designed landscape has all of these characteristics in mind. There is always something captivating all year long in my garden.

Garden Art Galore!

Every so often, I find garden art that I admire. It either blends in with the landscape or accentuates an area in the garden. It can also add character to a great meditative place. So why doesn't everyone think the way that I do? Everyone knows a person that goes over board with fake kitties, plastic yard art, or "cutsie" stuff in their garden. I'm glad that my neighbors prefer simple landscapes that aren't hard on the eyes.

Good to know John mentioned me recently. Yes, I feel certain there is common ground between us. What if we made a plan to meet up and go to some of the community garden sales coming up? I'm saving my pennies!

Hey GardenThymeGirl, are you called by that name because you specialize in thyme gardens? Just wondering.

The Xeriscaping talk was well attended yesterday. Randy Burroughs had a price list from the local mulch company for everyone to see. Finely mulched leaves sells for $65.00 a cubic yard. So why do people burn their leaves or put them in bags for the garbage men to collect them? Mulched leaves provides organic matter that enriches the soil, moderates the temperature around the plant and attracts earthworms. I will be providing a free xeriscaping workshop/talk in the near future and will post the date/time/location once I get the details worked out.

I just noticed on your profile that you've been accepted into the Clemson U. masters program for landscape architecture. OMG, that sounds so fabulous. Way to go.

Why go to a gym?

When I consider all the money I have spent in contracts to use a local gym, I realized that I could have spent that money on new plants. After spreading mulch for two hours today, I got a considerable work out for free. Every time I work in my yard, I get a work out! I am up and down my sloping yard everytime I garden and it's free also. I know I will miss the sauna at the gym, but I know how to make my own. No, I don't think I'm going to miss going to the gym and all that time that slipped away at the gym.

I love your idea. Wondering logistically how we'd go about it. Let me think on it.
