Gardening Experience:
Just garden for enjoyment
About Me:
I have gardened on our 25 acre piece of heaven south of Hendersonville for over 30 years. We're in a mountain hollow where we have a lot of shade, many critters that love to eat what I plant, and very rocky clay soil. Even so, my cottage-style gardens are a joy to me, and I work outside in them most of the day. I also have 2 beehives, and try to garden organically as much as possible. I have perennial/shrub borders, a butterfly garden, wild gardens, and a rose garden. I've learned to appreciate and landscape with the native plants, such as Joe Pye weed, ironweed, ferns, native laurels, azaleas, and rhodos. We are fortunate to have many beautiful wildflowers, trees and shrubs on our property, and I try to incorporate them into the design of the garden. We also have rocks for stone walls and borders which are a mixed blessing, since I have to extract them from the ground to plant. I am a proponent of raised beds, needless to say! The "lasagna garden" technique works very well for me.

Favorite Plants:
roses (sigh - too much shade!), foxgloves, forget-me-nots, peonies, hydrangeas, hellebores, hollyhocks, delphiniums, columbines, most any cottage garden flower that self-seeds or spreads on it's own!

This is my potting shed, Crickhollow Cottage. We customized a playhouse that we bought by adding the picket fence porch railings, shutters, scalloped trim, octagon window, and a bridge, and painting it in whimisical colors.

Enjoyed looking at your pictures--Just one question--How did you convince your husband to let you have such a cute potting shed? I hope you post some stories or pictures soon--love to hear other people's adventures and stories on gardening.

I understand the "Wife and Husband" having different hobbies so that they can be happy. It's the same for us. I believe you will get hooked on vermicomposting--if you ever need help or have questions--I'm did my intern project at Callaway Gardens on vermicomposting last summer. It's easy and rewarding to me.
