Plants for full shade

I have an area that gets no more than an hour of filtered sun each day.  I want to do some simple planting, nothing small or expensive as it measures about 30 X 10.In California I relied on…Continue

Looking at local private gardens

I'd like to walk in neighborhoods where there are a few great gardens.  I need to learn more about garden design, and that's one excellent way to see what really works.   I know there's an Arboretum…Continue

What about Squirrels?

I respect the little guys.  They manage to survive in cities and even ingratiate themselves with humans.  But, enough is enough, already! What are your favorite ways to prevent squirrels from eating…Continue

Wilting Rhododendrons

So, here's a puzzle.  I bought about 20 rhododendrons from 3 different stores.  I planted them immediately, with my customary care of big holes and lots of compost, and for a couple weeks they looked…Continue

Beautiful photo. Read your question re gardening on a hill, and can only hope you get answers, though I have none! I have friends moving here to Asheville (from Alaska) and their new yard is heavily sloped, so they will be dealing with this question very soon. Good luck!

My friends are moving here in August, and I'll come back to this thread when they've settled in with any questions they have!

Barbara,

Just joined the GardenAsheville site and saw your post.  As a landscape architect, have had the pleasure of seeing, and designing, many gardens.  My experience is that if you see a garden you would like to walk, knock on the door and ask.  Most people become suddenly extroverted when asked about their pride and joy, and will usually give a guided tour right on the spot.  That's the opportunity to ask about their successes and failures.  We are blessed with a diversity of plants that love the climate in WNC, so the choices are endless.  Good Luck.
