There's a new Ning helping to connect people who want to to share growing space, seeds, skills and gardening resources in order to grow food as locally as possible, literally right down the street. It's a natural extension of community gardening.
For example - your neighbor a few blocks away has a big flat lawn and works long hours so he has little time to garden. But he loves fresh veggies. You live in an apartment and have lots of time but no arable land. Yardsharing puts you together. You've never met but get connected online, discuss your needs, come to an agreement and start growing food to share. Together you tear up part of his lawn and grow beans and tomatoes. It's a win/win situation.
Wow. My neighbors and I are working up a plan to do this but we didn't have a name for it. They have lots of sun, I have too much shade. They asked me to co-grow a vegetable garden with them. I went over Sunday and we discussed what we want to grow and I sketched out 2 layouts for them. What fun! They are really good friends anyway, and just 2 doors down. I'm excited about it.
Thanks for letting people know about hyperlocavore! I just wanted to add that the permanent link is hyperlocavore.com - both will get you there at this time. I may move the site off ning in the future. The Asheville groups on the site seem pretty active...I lay that at your feet! Thanks!
