Garden Asheville

Hi,
I was hoping someone had some information on the carrion or starfish flower I acquired a few months ago. It looks very healthy and happy but I have read on internet sites that it is best to take cuttings yearly as this plant is very prone to rot. The idea is that when winter sets in the plants start to rot and it is best to take cutting and start all over yearly so as not to lose the plant. SOunds rather drastic to me. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks!
Christine
P.S. Mine has not bloomed yet but the blooms are awesome!

Sorry to take so long to reply to this...

There is no need to cut and re root Staplias, although it is an easy and effective method of propagation. The key is to make sure they have a very free draining planting mix, lots of coarse playground sand. They do not need much water, but don't mind frequent water during the growing season. They do require a dry, dormant season so don't water them much at all over the winter.

I also like putting them in tall planters, or hanging baskets so that they can trail down. Hanging baskets in particular are great for Stapelias because they dry out so quickly.

I love Carrion flowers!
