Garden Asheville

We are fairly new to the area and want to get our garden going asap. when is the earliest date in this area to plant root veggies such as onions?

I have found that average last frost date in Asheville is 4/24. everyone agree with that?

Things like onions, garlic, and shallots can be planted anytime. We have onions in the ground that we planted in October, January, and March and they are doing well. It is a bit early for taters unless you plan on using a cold frame or plastic to cover them with. We are putting in our main tater crop the last few days of March. You can put seeds down for Turnips, Beets, Collards, Carrots, Broccoli, Lettuce, Spinach, Kale, Chard, Cabbage and other frost hardy plants anytime now. The third week of April is about right for the last frost date. If you are planting by the moon signs than the last few days of March is when you want to plant taters. The first week of May is probably a good time for non frost hardy plants. The moon signs for above ground crops indicates that May 1-12 is a good time to plant above ground crops.
