There are many great plants for the shade. I would pick up a Shade gardening book that is relevant to our area. I always look at how big trees/plants get and then I wil draw up a simple design for myself. Generally, odd numbers look best in design. I stay away from the "Toy Soldier" look, which is planting in a straight line. Consider plants that will look good in this area, all year round.
Go with native plants. The Botanical Gardens at Asheville offers many examples. Walk that garden for ideas. Most o the plants are labeled.
