Hopefully the extreme heat is behind us! The next few weeks is an ideal time to rejuvinate those brown lawns of summer. Core-aeration (http://www.ashevillelawncareandlandscaping.com/Aeration.html)
fertilizer, lime and over-seed is best accomplished in late August to early September in our area. Fall seeding allows the new grass plants all fall/winter/spring to root in deep enough to withstand the summer heat. Fall fertilization is so important because the grass roots are actively growing. And finally, if you do nothing else, lime. Our naturally acidic clay soils stunt roots and plant growth. I always recommend an aeration first that way the lime can easily get deeper into the soil. Lime travels very slowly through the earth.
Cut high, water deeply and infrequently (unless you are germinating seed) and happy growing!

Is it better to aerate when the ground is dry (like now) or after a rain?

Hey Doug,

I've found that it's best a few days after a long steady rain; not muddy, but fairly saturated. We're beginning aerations this week since it coincides with the best time to seed. Personally I'm watering my lawn prior. It is so dry.

An aerator will almost bounce on extremely dry clays soils such as we have here.
