Last year and this year I have whiteflies on my tomatoes. How do you get rid of them?

I have found that safer soap works well, but with our rain situation you may need to apply frequently.
I was spraying every morning and able to control them for awhile. But with the rain, I lost the battle. They are now all over my tomatoes, squash, as well as gourds (which I have about 5-6 volunteer gourds that have taken over my fence). And with all those leaves- I didn't have time to turn over every leaf and spray the backside every day or every other day. My Mother-in-law read to paint milk jugs yellow- turn upside down and put on top of the tomato stakes and cover the jugs with vaseline or petroleum jelly. It works some but with the constant rain- I don't think it's what I need- the vaseline looses it's effectiveness with the water and the paint comes off the milk jugs.

I'm getting veggies with no problem - but am wondering if this white fly 'infestation' will be a yearly battle. Is it something in the soil??? How do I keep it from coming back next year??
I don't get them yearly. I think the trick is to get them when you first see them. I noticed some on my plant along with my first aphids. I just took my fingers and started squashing all the bugs. I followed with some safer soap and didn't have a problem at all after that. I do know that once they get on one plant they with spread easily to others. I find they also have an affinity for petunias. I think it's the sticky stems.
Ah ha! I had some petumias near my tomatoes this year. I read they were good pest deterrents. I won't be planting them near my tomatoes again!
think you are right!
