My back yard is terraced with railway ties. They are now starting to decay and
sag. Is their any way to shore them up or replace some of them with something
besides stone. We're not super young anymore, so something with in reason
financally and labor wise would be most helpful.. Open to any suggestion.
A lot depends on the height of the terraces and whether or not aesthetics are an issue. If the terraces have been in place long enough for the ties to deteriorate then the soil behind them is probably pretty stable. What might be possible (and involves digging post holes) is to put a second retaining wall behind the existing ties using ground contact 4x4s and 1x8 or 1x10 cedar planks. Fill the gap with dirt, gravel or other non-degradeable and then just let the ties crumble as they will. A stop-gap might be to simply anchor (it's got to be tight) chicken wire on either end of each section fastening the body of the wire to the ties. You might, rather than fastening the wire to the ties drive a series of iron fence posts along the back of the ties and secure to wire to the posts.
