Garden Asheville

It's a tough time of year for the container plants. The sun and heat causes them to cry for water. My dahlias seem especially hard hit by the heat, and some of the small pots need to be watered almost daily.

The Japanese beetles are attacking the hibiscus. And now I have a passion flower vine in a pot on my deck that is crawling with ants. Is this (ants on the passion flower) normal?

Try a self-watering container. Google it to find instructions for making it yourself, or you can buy them online or at stores. Basically, it's a container that allows the plant to draw up water from a reservoir while still ensuring adequate oxygen to the roots.

Regarding ants, whenever I see them, I look for aphids, scale, or some other honey-dew-producing insects. If you do see these, it probably means the ants are harvesting them for the honey dew and you need to get rid of them - less your plant feel a bit anemic....
