Garden Asheville

A friend of a friend is baffled by black spots on her peony leaves. I confess, I've never had any trouble with peonies but I said I'd put it to the group. How about it, peony experts? (GardenAsheville member Ricardo Fernandez in particular is an expert on peonies). Thanks for any advice.

Yes this is a disease that is very common here (and in Winston Salem too, where my mother has peonies). I've forgotten the name (bortryis?) but you should remove any leaves that have the black areas so it doesn't spread and cut the stems back if they get it too. In the winter, cut the plant back and burn it or put in the garbage so it doesn't over winter. I have it every year despite these precautions but my peonies still manage to do well.
