Garden Asheville

I have a problem with aphids on my winter lettuce (growing under row cover). Last year I tried insecticidal soap but the plants died (from the aphids or soap, not sure) so I'm hesitant to try that again. I sprayed them off with water but 2 days later they were back. Sprayed again with water. Any other (non-chemical) suggestions? No predatory bugs around my garden this time of year.

Have you tried uncovering them early in the morning so the birds can get to them?
they are tucked down in the baby center leaves so I think it would be hard for birds to get to. Thanks for the idea though, I'll try it when it warms up a little.
