Also, this is an alien sighting! I saw what I thought to be potting soil on my patio. It covered an area about 3 in. wide and 18 in. long and was about 2 in. high. As I started to sweep it up, I noticed that it was moving! Upon closer examination I saw that it was thousands (maybe millions) of 1/2 in. worms! They were crawling over each other to move the pile. My first thought is that it may have been fall tent worms on an expedition to the trees. It was moving fast enough that I didn't want to take the time to go get the camera. Has anyone ever seen anything like this or know what it might be?
I have not, but that sounds really weird. I second Polly's comment.
Started getting Jap beetles this week. I've been squishing them on my hibiscus on the deck. They came out by the bazillion last year on father's day, but not so all of a sudden this year. Maybe the rain has slowed them down.
Let's hope the aliens don't return to your patio. Doug
I agree with Polly! Well, I contacted the NC State Entomology Dept and the USDA so I'll see what I get. It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen! I sprayed it with hort oil and they all dissapated. I let it sit until all stopped crawling and then washed it away. I am so curious. I have a weeping cherry that gets the fall worms every year and I'm really hoping that I foiled their plans!
