Where do you buy Garlic to plant in the fall? I have not lived anywhere with cold enough winters to plant it, so this will be my first time: therefore, I'm open to any advice about planting and harvesting it
the fourth picture of a homemade greenhouse? how can i get that to send to someone, this is something i could actually do but the pix wont stay still for me. reminds me of the old mother earth news projects. its an inspiration and i have watched it twice but cant figure out how to e mail it to someone else. yet.
Ok, i am think realistically about moving up there from nw fla. i do container stuff and trees mostly. I wish to lease , buy or rent a 1/4 or 1/2 acre or more near hendersonville or waynesville where i can put my small camper. what grows best? I once lived in the adirondacks and ate a lot of turnips and wild stuff. Down here i do mostly basil , sage , rosemary and collards and like that. I am a small time, really eat the stuff organic if possible hobbyist. We have fire ants and they try to ruin everything. I got good watermelons a few years and lots of big trees but i am wondering what the main soils are up there in those areas. Heard there were a lot of apples., new york upstate had a lot of that. too hot down here but some pears. I am coaxing some chinese chestnuts along and may keep this place and go back and forth on a budget. Any help is great.
I usually get locally grown garlic at the farmer's market or french broad coop and plant it. That way, you get a variety that does well in this climate. You want to plant big bulbs so I plant the biggest and eat the smaller ones. I've always planted it in Sept/Oct, but maybe it works ok this late. I have to say my bulbs never get giant like my friend's that lives in Massachusetts (colder). I don't water and have heard you need to make sure they get plenty of water in May when they are setting bulbs. I will try that this year. I use compost in the soil but may try some fertilizer this year in the spring. Mulch well and keep weeded. They don't like competition.

I've been raking leaves and putting on top of the garlic - will that do as mulch? We have TONS of leaves...and I'm composting and putting directly into the garden beds.
Yes, I use leaves to mulch garlic, but they can compact if they are big and heavy. I use small leaves or shred them if they are big ones(a mower works fine for this)
Julianne here, still trying to get my trip to find my new forever home going but first here in nw fla we are having mega drought and 100 degree temps so i have to do some heavy serious watering or i will lose the ginko , pecan and others farmers almanac says it will rain pretty good in august tho. Still have this 1/2 acre and trees to trade for n georgia mountains, n alabama or western north carolina area land. Is it true that the voluntary simplicity folks are headed to mt airy, nc? also have 7 acres catskills in bovina near andes to trade. julianne2saw@yahoo.com happy gardening
