First Cicada exoskeleton ...

I took this pic of a Cicada exoskeleton on a Dogwood(!) tree in the Avant Garden today (there's a larger picture on my Web site). Should I be concerned? I love all trees, but Dogwoods mean so much to me that I write the word uppercase every time. Other trees are nice, too, but I can type elm or poplar without pause. And what other trees should I watch for? Which ones are they most likely to damage?
Anyone have a good recipe for Cicadas? I'd imagine those exoskeletons are high in calcium and protein. Crunchy, too.

--just touching base with you Dave--I've been swamped with work and haven't had time to get some foo foo ivy. Why don't you dip some of those Cicadas in chocolate and report back on what it tasted like--ha ha

Somewhere Cicadas in White Chocolate is a delicacy. Likesay, that ivy isn't going anywhere but up and out and over and around.

My little neice ( 4 Yrs old ) fills a cigar box up with 'em and uses it to freak people out! =)

Both Glenn Palmer's Ask a Gardener column and the front page story on the cicadas by Tony Kiss said these insects would be a nuisance but harmless basically to our landscapes.

Have you noticed they sound like a car alarm or a spaceship landing? I have friends in West Asheville who say there are few there ... and a friend in Franklin who says there are none. I am in north Asheville and they are almost a cloud in the air around here.

Friends of ours who live in north Asheville said the sound is deafening along Kimberly Avenue. Also, they are prolific out at the Folk Art Center. And the dead bugs stink quite a bit....
